Born 12th July 1925 . His last recorded education was in 1937/8 (12-13 years old). He left school for employment at 14, starting initially as an assistant plumber before moving to become a Tinsmith. By 1939 he was a greensman at the Brockville Country and Golf Club, then moved to a company called Lang Grinding Wheels in August 1939 as an electrician, then press operator. 

On 10 August 1943, aged 18, Norman applied to become aircrew and enlisted formally on 7th September.
